30 that more is being produced and higher quality goods and services are offered. In addition, benefits are also produ- ced for the community in terms of the environment, health and safety, due to the reduction of negative outcomes - pol- lution, illness and accidents - and associated costs. The environmental and social benefits are worth about 1.3 billion euros a year. Over 500 million of these savings, cal- culated by evaluating the annual reductions in CO2 emis- sions in euros, is attributed to environmental and energy certifications; 300 million are saved in social costs for mi- nor - and / or less serious - accidents, due to work safety management systems; 25 million derive from the use of accredited certifications in areas disciplined by European directives. A report on the application of the 2018 machinery direc- tive shows how both private and social benefits exceed by about 3 times the costs incurred by companies for adhe- ring to regulation imposed standards; the social bene- fits, expressed in greater health and fewer accidents, are estimated at about 400 million euros per year in Europe, which translates into about 68 million per year for Italy. The share corresponding to the action of the notified bo- dies is estimated at about 17 million euros. It is worth mentioning that costs related to certification are compensated by an improved company organization. THE MAIN CERTIFICATIONS The main types management systems certification are: quality (UNI EN ISO 9001), environmental (UNI EN ISO 14001), health and safety in the workplace (UNI ISO 45001 - formerly BS OHSAS 18001), information security (UNI ISO 27001), IT services (ISO / IEC 20000), energy (UNI CEI EN ISO 50001). Companies whose management system is certified by ac- credited certification bodies based on one or more of these standards, do so mainly for three different purposes: 1. compliance with specific legal requirements, 2. privileged access to a market that requires complian- ce, 3. organizational know-how to face the challenges of the current global economic system. WHO THE CERTIFIED COMPANIES ARE There are over 88,000 Italian companies with a certified management system under accreditation (with one or more of the certification standards rules) reaching a pro- duction value of 1,405 billion euros, which is approxima- tely 40% of the total turnover of businesses.
