D uring lockdown, the 4.0 companies based on bits, or on the combination of atoms and bits, not only managed to face the crisis, but some recorded extremely brilliant results. Zoom for instance, whose free version made it the symbol of smart working and online lessons, effectively tripled its turnover compared to the previous year, or Amazonwhich, owing to the boom in online shopping, has reached the all-time high value of its stocks. During the emergency phase, Italian companies, mostly manufacturing companies, thus producers of atoms, were “forced” to start digital transformation processes in order to continue to operate. Digitization has shifted from being an option to a necessity. However now SMEs must be helped to adapt, to acquire the necessary skills to face the challenges of technological innovation and finally to access the tax breaks. Digitizing isn’t merely the dematerializing of paper documents, but innovating strategies and business processes in an effective, safe and fast way. Often this process is seen as a cost, as an extra task rather than an investment and a growth factor. Why? As a result of starting at the end, from investment in technology rather than from training. Technology is a tool to achieve a goal, not the goal, and to make the most of a tool, to fully exploit its potential, it must first be fully understood. It would be like owning a Ferrari and keeping it in the garage because you can’t drive: an unnecessary cost. If, in addition to the lack of skills, companies are often under-structured and underfunded, then digitization can only be considered an unnecessary expense. But clearly it isn’t. It may be argued that in Europe the concept of non- proprietary lift equipment is disregarded and that the latest generation lifts of multinationals are practically steel-clad and out of the reach of maintenance companies. This may be true, but it is equally true that IoT technology is based on general principles and it is precisely on these basic concepts that we need to work. It is necessary to invest in a solid third level professional training to create the so-called “super technicians” and update their licenses to the new 4.0 skills. Furthermore, in my opinion, SMEs should establish a medium-term program and graft a series of short-term interventions, targeted investments perhaps on an annual budget, not necessarily digital transformation, which would however lead to far-reaching results. What first comes to mind is predictive maintenance, which is crucial as it saves time and optimizes economic and human resources, and secondly, managing orders and the supply chain with suitable software. Universities will be pivotal by making themselves available to the territory by transferring a range of skills d urante il lockdown, le aziende 4.0 basate sui bit, o sulla combinazione di atomi e bit, non solo so- no riuscite a fronteggiare la crisi, ma in alcuni casi hanno registrato risultati oltremodo brillanti. 7
