Cosa occorre fare? What needs to be done? To succeed in bringing the BIM process into an SME, it is necessary to make a preassessment of the level of BIM knowledge, and implement it not only at the training level, but also in the subsequent maintenance phase of the process, and everything that follows. If the company decides to produce BIM libraries, for example, it is necessary that these are kept up-to-date. It is also necessary that it is able to provide support in the use of these libraries to professionals who request them. To create the libraries, if internal resources are used, specific training on BIM Authoring platforms, i.e. software dedicated to BIM modelling, is required. The current UNI 11337 standard also provides for an assessment of the company’s BIM maturity level, which is carried out through an audit, and on the basis of which processes and people within the company are implemented. In the lift sector, there are companies that produce components or entire systems, but more often these are companies that assemble parts of lifts produced by other companies. As far as component manufacturers are concerned, one starts with an analysis of the models/elements produced by the company, and evaluates the optimal simplification that also takes into account parts for replacement/maintenance work that, for example, do not need to be visible, but only need to be counted. In the second case, on the other hand, it is necessary to request from third-party manufacturers the simplified elements that will have to be assembled to create a system. This is probably difficult to do, so a second, albeit more time-consuming, route could be to recreate the simplified parts from the detailed models provided by third-party manufacturers. How important is it to be able to provide BIM libraries? Even for the lift industry, being able to provide professionals with BIM libraries is certainly important, given the everincreasing demand from the market. Some companies have already realised libraries for the BIM world with the graphic component and all information related to the installation inside, so that it can also be managed by MEP professionals (plant engineering). What does the implementation of the BIM system entail within a company’s organisation, which processes does it affect? First of all, I am pleased to use the words ‘BIM system implementation’ because it is indeed a system that changes the business process, the way in which a project is analysed, budgeted, designed and managed, and, if desired, also the maintenance of the system. BIM does not allow, or severely limits, errors and problems on site, it positively affects costs and schedules, and improves the quality of design solutions. When is it advisable to train in-house staff and when is it better to use external professionals? Personally, I would ‘embrace’ the cause of in-house personnel, because turning to external professionals, apart from the higher cost, does not allow for total project management.
