At present, in most manufacturing SMEs, the demand for a new product is met through a long iterative process based on a pure trial-and-error approach: construction parameters are modified from time to time until the resulting product meets the desired requirements. This leads to longer times and higher optimisation costs for each individual process and/or product, in addition to facility oversizing, considerable manufacturing wastage, and the lack of comprehensive knowledge of how different parameters may affect product quality and performance. On the contrary, an innovative approach based on the development and use of advanced calculation models, customised to the company’s specific needs, would make it possible to analyse the performance of a complex product, such as the lift plant, in real operating conditions, immediately identifying weak points requiring intervention. This has led to the realisation of a full-scale demonstrator prototype already optimised according to the requirements of the reference market with considerable savings in terms of costs and production time. Compared to the pre-investment situation, there has been a significant reduction in the consumption of material resources, as a result of both the optimisation of the raw materials used and lower amounts of manufacturing waste. In addition, there has been an additional reduction in production costs through a better utilisation of machinery, less maintenance and lower energy consumption. Finally, for some structural lift components, new compound materials were tested as a replacement for standard composites, which have the advantage of a greater mechanical strength-to-weight ratio, allowing for a further reduction in the weight of the system, given the same load capacity. Clearly, in order to maximise results and fully exploit the properties of compound materials, it would be necessary to redesign the entire structure rather than just a few components.
