30 structural levels), in front of landing doors and inside the car; • recommendations for building insulation (airborne and structural) with gradually stricter requirements between study and office rooms, living and rest rooms, and according to the various acoustic classification categories of the building; • arrangements for structural equipment and installation; • guidance for measuring noise in the room, in the car and in front of doors in frequented areas, and the overall sound insulation of the system and the building. The VDI 2566 regulations also suggests the mass per unit area that the walls of the building must have depending on the use of the rooms. Since the noise usually found inside rooms, without additional measures, is around 50 [dB] the remaining abatement must be achieved with structural insulation systems. Assessment criteria The appendix to standard UNI 11367 contains the correct methods for recording and evaluating the results of the tests; it is required that these evaluations be carried out by a competent acoustics technician who is responsible for the overall evaluation of the characteristics of the entire building for all the stresses mentioned above. Final considerations For all of the above, it is evident that the installer and maintainer of a lift system can certainly intervene at the source by purchasing good quality equipment, installing it correctly and providing regular and good registration and maintenance. The operating noise of the equipment at the source is certainly much higher than the 35 dB that must be perceived inside the building, so it becomes of fundamental importance to abate the noise that is obtained with the correct evaluation and construction of the building structures, floors and walls, especially supported by any panelling or even furnishing of the rooms. This is a very complex subject and is intended for acoustics specialists who must evaluate all aspects to which a building has to respond as a result of the various stresses it receives, of which the lift system, which has discontinuous operation, is only one part. The best result can only be achieved through close collaboration between environment design and lift system design, with a preliminary assessment of the foreseeable impact and the definition of all useful construction measures to minimise the need for further local intervention.
