Nacque così il TPS (Toyota Production System), un meTHE automotive industry has in the past been, and still is today, one of the most competitive and cruel. In a history of just over a hundred years, we have seen many well-known brands emerge, prosper and, at times, disappear. A continuous struggle for survival that, as happens in nature, has generated defence mechanisms that are fundamental to the perpetuation of the species. The first great revolution took place in the United States, with Henry Ford who, at the beginning of the 20th century, was the first to scientifically analyse production, which until then had been essentially artisanal, assessing the inefficiencies and overcoming them with the creation of the first assembly line. It was a huge step that marked the history of the manufacturing industry and put process optimisation and efficiency in the spotlight. The second revolution, from my point of view even more innovative, originated in Japan in the late 1940s. Toyota at that time was a small manufacturer, with few resources, old factories. There were no conditions to apply Ford’s model, which required large investments. Taiichi Ōno, the production manager, decided to take a different path, focusing on flexibility, on the valorisation and empowerment of human resources, on the obsessive fight against waste, on stock reduction, on quality and customer satisfaction. Thus was born the TPS (Toyota Production System), a method that not only brought Toyota success, still today the world’s leading car manuNELLA PRATICA QUOTIDIANA, APPLICARE IL PENSIERO SNELLO SIGNIFICA CONCENTRARSI SULL’ELIMINAZIONE DEGLI SPRECHI, MIGLIORARE L’EFFICIENZA OPERATIVA E VALORIZZARE LE COMPETENZE DEL PERSONALE In everyday practice, applying lean thinking means focusing on eliminating waste, improving operational efficiency, and enhancing staff skills
