SANTA JUSTA, PORTUGAL There is also a quite different panoramic lift that blends perfectly into the urban fabric. This is Lisbon’s Santa Justa, a neo-Gothic style lift reaching a height of 45 metres and connecting the lower town of Baixa with the upper town of Chiado and Bairro Alto. It was designed by Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, a Portuguese engineer and pupil of Gustave Eiffel. The Santa Justa is constructed of iron and steel, while the cars are panelled in wood with brass handles and details to recreate a retro atmosphere. Once at the top, the view of Lisbon’s skyline is breathtaking, the best in the city. 81
