30 INNOVAZIONE E TECNOLOGIA DI FABIO BONFANTE* E ALDO BIZZOZERO** architecture with at least two independent channels that monitor each other; diagnostic coverage exceeding 99%, i.e. the ability to automatically detect almost all internal faults before they cause a hazardous event; software development with full traceability of every requirement, every modification and every test performed; formal management of the entire system lifecycle, from initial specification through to decommissioning. It is therefore not enough for a sensor or module to simply state ‘SIL3 capable’ on its datasheet. The entire system into which it is integrated must be designed, verified and documented according to the same criteria. This requires specific expertise, structured processes and a corporate culture focused on the quality of technical data, not just that of the physical product. There is no point in hiding it: a SIL-certified system costs more. The component costs more, the integration process takes longer, and the documentation is more demanding. But the costs must be calculated over the system’s lifecycle, not based on the price list of individual components. A well-designed electronic safety system continuously self-diagnoses: it reports the status of every critical function, flags anomalies before they manifest as faults, and records events useful for scheduled maintenance. For maintenance staff, this means fewer emergency call-outs, quicker diagnostics, and spare parts ordered in good time rather than as a matter of urgency. For those who build control panels or systems, it means less physical cabling, software-based configuration, faster commissioning, and a tangible reduction in installation errors. The initial cost is real. The operational savings, in the medium term, are just as real. Let’s be clear about this: many independent operators – local manufacturers, maintenance companies, control panel manufacturers – have chosen, whether consciously or not, not to invest in this technology. Regulatory complexity, development costs and the need for new skills are all real obstacles, though none are insurmountable. What is the issue here? A failure to understand the regulations, or a failure to realise that the market was changing? The lifts we work on every day are already equipped with PESSRAL. Working on a new-generation system already involves dealing with this technology, often without having the tools to manage it properly. Not knowing these systems is no longer a neutral choice: it is an operational risk, a commercial limitation and, in certain contexts, a matter of direct liability. Those who have not yet equipped themselves still have a window of opportunity. But it is narrow, and it closes with every new installation that chooses another supplier. The good news is that the necessary skills are not out of reach.
