Fra questi, il plasma non termico (NTP – Non ThermalPlasma) è caratterizzato attacked by oxidizing substances, thus inactivating the viral cell. In fact, cysteine compounds are abundant in viral membrane proteins and must be “preserved” to allow virus replication and for the viral cells to enter into the body. The inactivation of viruses by oxidizing compounds, has been studied less than bacteria inactivation; however, it is known to occur rapidly by the ionizing device based on Non-Thermal Plasma (NTP) technology. In fact, inactivation curves have shown a rapid reduction of up to 99.99%.The mechanism of action of the so-called Cold Plasma or NTP on viruses is certainly not destruction, as in the case of bacteria, but inactivation. The action of NTP ionization would result in oxidation, and consequent inactivation, of the specific viral receptors used to create the bond with the wall of the targeted cell. This would block the first phase of the viral reproduction mechanism: cell invasion. So, what is cold plasma? There are various types of plasma; in general, this is defined as a completely or partially ionized gas, consisting of various particles such as electrons, ions, atoms and molecules, which as a whole is electrically neutral. Among these, non-thermal plasma (NTP - Non-Thermal Plasma) is characterized by the temperature of a few tens of degrees centigrade, which is precisely why this plasma is called cold and can be made at atmospheric pressure. The accelerated electrons induce ionization, excitation and dissociation of the gas molecules, leading to the formation of excited molecules, atoms, ions and radicals which, if oxygen is present, are referred to as APPROFONDIMENTO d i A n t o n i o G a l g a r o
