These procedures, which prevent accidents that could have very serious consequences (falling into the shaft, shearing), on the other hand, can produce most of the eleva- tor’s operating stoppages. Therefore the quality of the door, and its installation, are essential to provide a continuous and safe service. As the door is one of the components that is most subject to wear and impacts, it must be of a kind that can withstand the workload. Lifting platforms are in great demand today, even the automatic doors variety, which run few times a day and therefore are not subject to excessive wear. However, there are installations of different nature: there are hospitals or care facilities lifts on whose closed doors stretchers can be pushed or open while entering the car. Similar scenarios occur in industrial plants and warehouses even with forklifts. Tall buildings, due to their many floors and therefore many doors, may suffer such problems too. Several complications may arise when installation is de- manding. For instance, a fast lift must meet acoustic insula- tion requirements to avoid being perceived as noisy from the outside. In the case of well pressure problems, the cabin squeezes the air in the direction in which the lift is moving, creating an air gap underneath which can pull in the doors under the car, while those above are somehow pushed out. In the Italian market there are few fast lifts, but potentially problematic lifts for a number of reasons are quite wide- spread. Door manufacturers provide a wide range of products suit- able for any scenario, but it is the lift operator’s responsi- bility to provide all the specifications, even when the end customer is unable to do so, because possible problems must be prevented. At times the final customer will consider ex- clusively the price and (in some cases of public works pro- curement) the lift installer does the same, as he does not expect to maintain the lift. In such cases it the user who ends up being short changed, and so does the maintenance technician! For example, if the door is low quality and can- not be installed properly, the lift is virtually doomed forever. In any case, after a certain period, some of the components of the door, which are always in motion, such as the guide shoes or rollers, will have to be replaced. In addition, there are regular maintenance operations that must also be per- formed on the best products. The maintenance technician must therefore have the neces- sary spare parts. This is a serious problemwhen the installa- tion date is not recent: the installer may no longer exist, and neither may the manufacturer of the door. As for automo- biles or appliances, the solution is easier: after a few years, cars or washing machines are replaced with newer models, but this is not true for lifts. In fact, especially for public con- tracts, lift companies often claim to be able to perform the service, but actually they do not have the original spare quindi non sono soggette a un’usura eccessiva.
