This means that if problems occur with the cables due to incorrect production process or incorrect packaging (by the manufacturer or retailer) the customer can request their replacement. However, extreme caution is required because often the issues arise only after a few months of operation, making it difficult to demonstrate that they are really due to a manufacturing defect rather than to incorrect storage, assembly, maintenance. Not considering cable design defects which are extremely rare for well-known manufacturers, there can be, two generic types of production defects. The first relates to steel quality, certain batches, may present poor shear strength. The second is the occurrence of broken cables, as early as in the cable production phase: large diameter cables breaks are normally repaired during the stranding phase, which does not happen on smaller cables. Therefore a new cable may have some visible broken wires which however do not affect functioning (unless the number is extremely high). Checking new cables is always recommended to ascertain the presence of broken wires as this must be reported, even if the breaks are not caused by usage. In all other cases, especially where the cables have been used for months, any problems that may arise are typically due to incorrect commissioning of the cables, rather than already existing defects. Checking: from the stick to the magnetoinductive method As I’m writing I like to think the reader immediately notices the almost surreal juxtaposition between the sacred and the profane. The so-called ‘stick’ is not a test method, it is not indicated in any legislation, it is not functional. Yet, it is well- known and passed down for generations. The magneto-inductive method, on the other hand, is included in all sector regulations concerning cables and in some cases it is also required by law. In the lift sector today, in Italy, it is used on a small percentage of the total number of facilities. This short paper is not intended to describe in detail the operation of a magneto-inductive system as there are plenty of articles in which the physical principle is adequately explained with examples and normative references. What must be said however, is that the methodology is capable of detecting broken cables, wear and corrosion. The very fast inspection results produce a graph which, if properly analysed, allows to highlight the above. The check is repeatable and the instrumentation is subjected to type tests that guarantee a certain sensitivity, defined in the UNI / TS 11807 Technical Specification. One wonders why such a methodology has been included in a certainly conservative field such as the lift sector. One would think that a thorough visual analysis is completely 18 FOCUS TECNICO/ FUNI d i B r u n o V u s i n i
