• incorrect tensioning of the ropes; • twisting of the rope along the run; • incorrect lubrication. In the first case, clearly any estimate of specific pressure is not valid. Pulleys with homogeneous surface hardness on all the grooves suddenly show abnormal wear on one or two grooves, perhaps placed at opposite ends. These are errors that often occur also in the modernization phase of dated winches, by changing the type of ropes with the same pulley (textile core / metal core, number of strands, etc.). The use of electronic tools dedicated to assessing the tensional state of the ropes is therefore strongly recommended. Ropes from the same production batch are also recommended; therefore, with uniform stranding direction (right or left). So that unavoidable disparities in elasticity are eliminated, which especially evident during the start-up phase of the plant. In the second point there is a real abrasive effect of the ropes marking the sides of the grooves with the external strands. This phenomenon is sometimes highlighted on long runs by observing the straight colored lines that increasingly mark the ropes of the best manufacturers. It is not uncommon to encounter rotations of tens of degrees on the longitudinal axis of the rope during the run, in case of incorrect installations. With deviations, the alignment of the traction grooves must be evaluated with the return grooves: any off-axis of a few mm leads to degree misalignments on the external grooves with increased wear on one of the sides. Particular attention must be paid when the MRL machine is placed at the top near the counterweight with return rotated by 90 ° with respect to the traction: any centering errors of the axes of the traction-return central grooves have negative effects on the lifespan of the traction. As for the hardening treatments, the advent of pulleys with a diameter of less than 320 mm and the use of 6 / 6.5 mm wire ropes have led to an increase in the number of ropes installed with gradually smaller pitches in order to not exceed dimensional constraints imposed by the newMRL lifts. In some cases, innovative solutions have allowed to reach a hardness higher than 50 HRC without increasing the fragility of the ridges between the gorges. As for the ropes lubrication, adequate procedures have been proved to lead to higher traction coefficients as they favor “wedging” of the strands within the geometry of the groove. The phenomena described briefly above are the subject of various studies and more extensive and detailed scientific treatments: the advice is always to read up on and stay updated on the developments of the technique without, however, forgetting the basic teachings that come from the history of lift systems and from accumulated experience.
