40 Winches for small spaces, outdoors or aggressive environments: indications, precautions, problems and solutions There is a range of specific gearless machines in IP 66 protection which have proved to be fundamental for the execution of systems in dams or mobile barriers, both in Italy and abroad. Other installations involved facilities on cruise ships subject to similar working conditions for humidity and salinity. To these applications that concern the mechanics of the machines, or the special processes and the protections applied to them for certification, we can add special painting cycles specifically developed for these environments. They consist of careful surface preparation (fine sandblasting), the use of special mono and bi-component epoxy primers that prepare the pieces for final painting. This two-component polyurethane-based finish allows to reach high thicknesses of the protective film in order to ensure perfect protection of the machines in the most difficult environments. Other requests for IP54 machines in the world of winches are met with the use of special B3 motors: the next choice is whether to have a simple degree of protection or to switch to the more complex Atex grades for explosive environments (explosive dust / gas environments). In these cases, the special electromagnet brake and any encoder must also comply with the specifications set by the customer. Belt winches and gearless and independent manufacturers Belts begin to appear on the market outside the large multinationals for a very simple reason: the natural expiration of the patents that protected them in lifts. The early 2000s witnessed the appearance of “alternative” technologies for belts to try to exploit their advantages without running into legal problems: ropes covered with special polymers. Thanks to the specific certifications for use with small diameter pulleys, they have given a new drive to the development of small and low power machines. First winches with small pulleys from 210-240 mm were born, then we moved on to the development of gearless motors of reduced dimensions (driving torques around 140 Nm, pulleys in the 120-160 mm range). Another advantage of these solutions is the use of fewer ropes for two simple reasons: safety checks facilitated by the semicircular pulley grooves without notches and high friction coefficients (“μ” declared 2.5-3 times higher than those of the steel). Even the requirement of the minimum safety coefficient with only 2 ropes / belts is generally certified at 12, against the 16 required by the EN 81-50 standard. The belts in this first phase of “liberalization” allow a further step in the choice of the diameter of the traction: it can be reduced to 100 mm, cutting a further 20% of the required drive torque. The minimum safety factor value of 12 is maintained. Another advantage is the ability to withstand even reverse bending, usually not allowed by manufacturers of covered ropes, except for rare exceptions.
