PROFITABILITY, REVENUES, COSTS Once the dimensions of the sector have been defined at a macro level, it is advisable to consider some profitability parameters which, again for the sample of limited companies and for the two main Ateco codes, determine a ratio between EBITDA (gross operating margin) and revenues from sales (net turnover) of approximately 6% in 2021. This figure is still affected at an economic level by the Covid-19 effects since in 2019, in the same terms, the figure was higher than 11%. The data do not allow for an analysis with a high level of detail to understand the cost structure and any inefficiencies. In any case, the examination of profitability allows us to create a link between the profitability of the company and the daily commitment required by financial management. The two parameters are strongly linked given that facing a growing cost of money, the subjects of the sector have to address an expansion of collections: the gap between the average days of collection of customers and the average days of payment to suppliers is growing. The range for the year 2021 has two extremes between a maximum of approximately 300 days of waiting for the collection of receivables and an average of approximately 100 days for the payment of suppliers. Firms, therefore, are called upon to carry out activities for customers, but also to “finance” them, being “bad payers”. We are increasingly witnessing the growth in the value of working capital, i.e. the net balance of the value of receivables and inventories net of trade payables. Current payables to suppliers are paid in the short term, as are fixed costs (staff and other expenses such as rent or technical fees for capital goods), while trade receivables are collected late. In addition to the growth of working capital, the increase in the cost of money leads companies to have a growing burden for interest expense, as they have to anticipate the invoices issued and get financed to pay spot expenses. CREDIT MONITORING Following this scheme, it is essential for businesses to increase the level of monitoring of receivables and collection times because additional delays generate higher interest charges and, with lower profitability than in the past, businesses risk ending up in a stalemate (substantial break-even) or even worse (loss after interest cost calculation). Companies in the sector must be aware that the cost of money is also one of the elements they must consider in their price list, due to the need to deal with increasingly marked delays in the collection of receivables.
