THE installation of lifts in historical buildings, or inside residential buildings in a historic town centre context, or in an area of landscape interest, in order to guarantee their accessibility, requires special attention due to the nature of the building in which one is going to intervene. When we speak of lift installation, it should be emphasised, many times we also mean the attached metal shaft. This is true for the whole of Europe, which is rich in historic centres, cities of art and landscapes that must be protected whenever a new system is to be installed, and it is even more true for Italy, with its undeniable heritage of art and beauty that is often expressed in its natural landscapes and cities that are our pride. We are talking about lifts within particular structures and contexts with a high value, as well as situations in which the landscape must be protected; lifts that serve buildings dating back to the last century, for example, within historic centres of high artistic value; often, the buildings themselves are a cultural heritage, or at least an heritage to be protected for its beauty and historicity; lifts that must integrate harmoniously not only with the building, but also with its surroundings, be it a city or an area of landscape interest to be protected. Contexts, therefore, where the installation becomes an integral part of the decorations and artistic furnishings of the location, much more so than for a lift in a modern context, however elegant and refined. We are thinking of historic buildings with finely decorated rooms, exteriors of buildings of high cultural value where a lift can be installed without compromising the context. Just think of situations where the lift is to be installed in an open shaft in the stairwell of a historic building, perhaps where there is already a pre-existing structure, a metal frame that must be preserved for its artistic value, or a building whose external structure and surrounding garden must be protected - not to mention what may be the very special systems to be installed inside or outside buildings that are recognised as World Heritage sites. The lift installed in such a context becomes an integral part of it, and as such must be thought of. So how should one act to install a system within such a complicated context, and how should one move to avoid damaging structures, whether natural or man-made, that are more fragile than a recent building or a modern construction? In order to act in the best possible way and be sure of going in the right direction, 43 IN CONTESTI PARTICOLARI, COME NEL CASO DI ZONE AD INTERESSE STORICO O PAESAGGISTICO, È OPPORTUNO RIVOLGERSI A REALTÀ PREMIUM CHE ABBIANO LE CONOSCENZE E LE COMPETENZE PER PROGETTARE, CREARE ED INSTALLARE UN ASCENSORE In special contexts, such as areas of historical or landscape interest, it is advisable to turn to premium companies that have the knowledge and skills to design, create, and install a lift
