52 masonry and constrained to the height of the upper landings only by a system of pressure anchors. The metal shaft is made of Corten, a steel with high mechanical resistance that allows for a reduction in thickness and consequently in the weight of the products. Thanks to its excellent resistance to corrosion, Corten can be used in its “naked” state because it protects itself from atmospheric agents by covering itself with a uniform and long-lasting brown patina in harmony with the colours of the thousand-year-old walls of the Colosseum. The metal structures were designed and built with reduced section profiles and assembled with bolted joint components directly on site. In full compliance with the pillars of the restoration, the frame is fully reversible, which means it can be removed without damaging the monument. From the feasibility study, to the design, to the construction and commissioning of the metal structure took about four years, with forced interruptions due to Covid. The greatest difficulty was having to work on a construction site that was always open to tourists, who reached peaks of 30 thousand people a day in the high season. The installation has been realised in order to guarantee a wider accessibility for all visitors, without any exclusion, and to allow the use of the intermediate gallery, which underwent restoration between 2021 and 2023 together with the entire north façade of the Colosseum. With this in mind, the PArCo also envisaged the provision of a small stair lift which, using one of the modern stairwells along the gallery, will make it easier to reach the floor of the third level. In addition to the new lift, the Colosseum is equipped with two panoramic hydraulic lifts connecting the 1st and 2nd levels on the inner side of the Stern spur, installed in a load-bearing tower with lateral pistons bound to the structure of the shaft, and with a freight elevator to descend to the underground. We at Metal Working Srl are proud to have contributed to improving the accessibility of a historic site of global importance like the Colosseum and to have created a design structure, in harmony with the architectural context, without ever losing sight of safety. To have successfully completed such an ambitious project as the Colosseum is for us an important goal that repays all the work done so far, the continuous push for innovation and quality, keeping up with the latest technologies and procedures, having acquired certifications and obtained patents thanks to the many projects developed by our Research and Development department. Never has our pay-off been more appropriate than in this case: “When metal takes shape it becomes an asset at the service of ma” and, after the Colosseum, also at the service of history. *Responsabile Dipartimento Marketing e PR Metal Working Srl CASE HISTORY DI FRANCA BORZAGA*
