È probabile però che queless than 10 employees; those exceeding this limit are estimated to be in the order of a couple of hundred, but they too are not of significant size: those exceeding ten million in turnover can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Most of the independent or subsidiary companies that have a turnover in excess of one million euros, or a number of employees in excess of 10, have a quality management system compliant with ISO 9001 certified by an appropriate body (the most present are IMQ and DNV). We have surveyed over 150 of them, some of which are micro-businesses; in addition, a few dozen component manufacturers and specialised service providers are ISO 9001 certified. The standard business model in the lift industry, excluding large companies, is of three types: a) more structured companies that design, assemble and install new lifts, in addition to dedicating themselves to services; b) companies that call on others to design the lifts they install, possibly buying them entirely from one supplier, in addition to dedicating themselves to services; c) micro-companies that dedicate themselves exclusively or almost exclusively to services. In theory, it is possible to certify the quality system of any company, but when there are only, say, five of them, the organisation to be managed is rather basic. Companies in the first group are usually structured into a management team, a technical design and purchasing department, an administration department, a commercial department, an operational department for the installation of new equipment, and one for the management of services, as well as having a quality manager if certified and a person responsible for carrying out the final examinations if they have chosen this route. The second type may combine some of these functions in certain figures or lack them, and the third often combines the essential ones in the figure of the owner alone, perhaps assisted by a family member. There are also, very few, lift companies that produce part of the components they install, usually metalwork. Component manufacturers today generally specialise each in a given type of product, but some have the capacity to supply their customers with several components or even the entire lift system to be assembled on site, including its design. A number of companies with an ISO 9001 certified system have other certifications, which are almost always those relating to safety management systems according to ISO 45001 and/or environmental management systems according to ISO 14001. Among lift manufacturers we surveyed 30 certifications according to ISO 45001 and 23 according to ISO 14001; among component manufacturers 9 of each type. Most of the companies concerned have both. It goes without saying that almost all of them are, among the SMEs, the larger ones. There is no shortage of other types of certification, albeit still few in number: five of the lift operators have a management system for the prevention of corruption certified according to ISO 37001, four lift operators and one component supplier have an energy management system certified according to ISO 50001, two lift operators and one component supplier have a system for the promotion of gender equality according to UNI PdR/125.
