COME GESTÌ L’INTERVENTO? Consegnammo l’impianto in tempo. PAPA FRANCESCO SI MOSTRÒ SODDISFATTO DELLA RIPARAZIONE DELL’IMPIANTO? La leggenda vuole, questo aneddoto mi è stato raccontato, io non ero presente ovviamente, che quando Papa Francesco arrivò davanti all’ascensore chiese quando fossero finiti i sodes of his career, amidst anecdotes, special assignments and a Sistine Chapel experienced alone. ENGINEER DI LILLO, LET US START WITH THAT FAMOUS EPISODE OF THE POPE BEING STUCK IN THE LIFT. It was 1 September 2019. I was with my wife at the time. I read a report from the Ansa agency reporting the news of the Pope being stuck in a lift and I told her, ‘You’ll see that they’ll call me soon. I had already had contacts with the Vatican, so it did not seem such a remote possibility. She was sceptical, however, and tried to bring me back down to earth. Two days later I actually received a phone call from the Vatican Governorate. WHEN DID YOU MAKE THE FIRST INSPECTION? On Wednesday morning I was already at the Vatican. The fire brigade had freed Pope Francis and subsequently put the lift out of service. Actually, there is a team of four lift technicians working in the Vatican, coordinated by an old-school chief technician with long experience in various Roman companies. Officially, the lift technicians are classified as electricians, and this sometimes creates some difficulties, especially in managing on-call time. They had already planned some modernisation work on the system, but for extraordinary work of this kind, the Vatican, as a matter of practice, never relies solely on internal personnel: it prefers to involve highly specialised external companies. WERE THERE ANY SPECIAL CONDITIONS TO BE MET? Yes, I was entrusted with the job on one very specific condition: the installation had to be back in operation by Thursday of the following week, when Pope Francis would be returning from an apostolic trip to South Africa. HOW DID YOU MANAGE THE INTERVENTION? It was a real race against time. We rebuilt everything, including the control panel. I ordered it with a phone call to Egidio Cappelletti, director of Elettroquadri. I told him that I had a special urgency, that it was a special customer. He replied that I said that every time I called him. Then I added: ‘Egidio, look, this time I’m at the Pope’s house.’ It usually takes three to five weeks to get a manoeuvre control panel. Egidio was very quick: he managed to get it from Bisuschio to Rome in just 48 hours. We worked nonstop even on weekends, day and night. We delivered the installation on time. WAS POPE FRANCIS SATISFIED WITH THE REPAIR OF THE INSTALLATION? Legend has it, this anecdote was told to me, I was not present of course, that when Pope Francis arrived in front of the lift, he asked when the work was finished. He was told that the company had left two hours earlier. Apparently he then said: ‘That’s fine... I’ll take the other one!’, as if to say: why do I have to test it? ATTUALITÀ DI TITTI LO PAPA
