86 perceived safety and usability are significantly lower among people with hearing impairments. Over a third (37.28%) avoid taking the lift alone and 21% say they can only use it if accompanied. While 80% of people with normal hearing find using lifts “very easy”, 31% of deaf or hard-of-hearing people find it difficult or very difficult. 37.97% report problematic experiences, compared to 12.90% of the control group. However, the most striking data concerns communication in emergencies: 82% of deaf people indicate this as the main critical issue, compared to 2% of people with normal hearing. Almost half of deaf people feel unsafe or very unsafe in lifts, compared to 13% of people with normal hearing. Many prefer stairs, which they perceive as more controllable. The request is unequivocal: 81.55% ask for a visual or text interface with the operator, while 94% consider video calls or text messages to be essential. Among hearing people, voice calls remain sufficient and only 3% consider messaging as an alternative. 72.72% of deaf people prefer transparent walls (compared to 33.78% of people with normal hearing), a preference that rises to 100% among the over-65s. Over 54% would increase indoor lighting. Those who have been deaf since birth encounter more difficulties than those who have acquired hearing loss. Cochlear implant users feel more confident (75%) than those who use hearing aids (47%) or no aids at all (40%). When asked what features they would like to see added to lifts, 52% requested video, displays or video calls, 16% wanted better communication with the outside world, 11% wanted text messages, followed by transparent walls (9%), light signals (8%) and sign language (4%).
