Years of reassurance on the effectiveness of the safety devices and more powerful mirrors and lights in the cabin haven’t changed the situ- ation much. Nor has the persistence of official statistics been enough, despite describing the lift as the safest means of transport in the world ... The dreadful tendency to save in installing modern cabins, whether new installations or renovations of existing cab- ins, certainly did not help the vertical traveller. The choice of materials and their arrangement in that self-propelled square meter (the minimum size of an elevator car for the adaptation of existing buildings in Italy is 0.8x1.2m…) is often pure squalor on vertical rail. Unquestionably, walk- in closets have had more exposure in the last 50 years ... Curiously, we are happy to witness (and we are really used to) the great technological evolution of cars, wash- ing machines and whatever else modern technology offers us. Alas, our elevators have had a different fate, at least in their most common form: the apartment building lift. A feared place for socializing on the landing, a neglected entry in the building budget but always the subject of epic arguments at the condominium meeting, lifts are too of- ten neglected in the care and renovating intentions of our buildings, just one notch above the grimy basement boiler. Yet, since the days when Vitruvius described a rudimen- tary load lifter invented by Archimedes in 236 BC, we too have made progress. Let’s see a short, and certainly not comprehensive, overview of the changes that have affected some components. 27
