The Car FRAME by Alessio Beretta If we compared the lift to the human body, the mechanical part, more commonly called the car frame, would be the skeleton, an irreplaceable, fundamental structure, without which life would not be possible. In the lift, the car frame has exactly the same function: made largely of metal, it is an apparently simple but extremely important element for the safety and proper functioning of the system. We can find traces of the lift since the time of the Roman Empire, when lifting systems were used to allow the entry of gladi- ators or wild beasts inside the Colosseum. However it was only in 1853, when Otis presented the first lift equipped with an automatic safety device during an exhibition in New York, that the first modern lift was seen. It was the first car frame with safety components. At the time, the car frames were mainly made of shaped bars welded and bolted on site. Their quality and durability were closely linked to the professionalism of who assembled them on site. From that fateful date to today, the evolution of the mechanical part has made great strides. Today, thanks to engineering and optimization of production processes, the mechanical part has evolved into a more perform- ing element, with much shorter assembly times than in the past, as well as being stylistically improved. The old shaped bars have been replaced by laser cut and folded sheet metal profiles; the old hand-welded joints have been replaced by proportioned bolted joints. The greater knowl- edge of the materials and the greater accuracy in sizing have optimized the car frames with significant advan- tages in terms of weight. In recent years there have been dramatic episodes on old lifts that crashed badly due to the failure of the mechanical part, determined, in many cases, by corrosion, poor maintenance or incorrect design. The current regulations are lacking in terms of car frame sizing, leaving this delicate issue in the hands of designer and manufacturing companies. If the ropes attachment of a traditional system failed, nothing would be able to stop it from falling, not even the parachute, as the organ that should activate it would fail. If the return pulley of the frame yields, nothing would prevent it from falling onto the cabin roof with obvious consequences. In view of this, in recent years some companies have started collaborat- ing with suppliers of electrical components, to raise the lifespan and safety of mechanical components. Predictive maintenance is already real. At present we can remotely monitor sensitive components such as bearings, deforma- tion of load-bearing beams, etc. and report a malfunc- tion to the maintenance technician before it becomes an actual damage. Thanks to new, more accessible technolo- gies, it is possible to predict, knowing the final location of the system, the type and exact thickness of the paint to be applied, the lifespan of the mechanical component with or without scheduled maintenance. 3D modeling has made it possible to make enormous strides compared to just twenty years ago. Currently it is possible to fashion a 353
