Many of these companies had a workshop to carry out the nec- essary work, a blacksmith workshop manager who built lift well protections, guide fixing brackets, gates / landing doors, metal cabins, suspensions and frames. The electrical depart- ment was very simple, usually confined to a corner, wiring massive relays and contactors on metal frames; there was no structured warehouse and the office was limited to a desk and two chairs (little administration, lots of sketches and drawings, lots of practice). Once built some anti-rust was brushed on and off it went to the construction site; the “just in time” of necessity was in force. Assistance was a distinct activity, with maintenance workers who carried out their rounds on a weekly, fortnightly, monthly basis by bicycle, with few tools, nothing more than a can of lubricant and a brush. The occasional calls were assigned based on how close to home they were, the work was divided into six days and the next week’s work was scheduled on Sunday morning. Apprentices were incredibly easy to come by, not being always paid, they learned the ropes of the job that inseparably linked them to Italy’s economic comeback, despite only some may have reached success, they were all crucial and passionate for a profession still unknown to the great public. Perhaps those were the days when the proud words were first heard spoken: “there’s one of my lifts in that building”. A second important date is May 1963 with the publication of the Presidential decree 1497. The regulatory style is unchanged: precise, clear technical ar- ticles that define exactly what can and cannot be done, as well as an a public body which periodically follows and interprets
