For this purpose, it must be remembered that there are no rope constructions better than the others, but rope constructions that are more suitable according to the constructive characteristics of the specific installation.Just to cite an example, the Seale construction ropes, having the external wires of greater diameter, are particularly suitable when dealing with bending ratios greater than or equal to 40: 1, and when the number of pulleys is limited. These ropes performvery well in terms of resistance to surface wear typically caused by the friction on the traction groove. On the other hand, they have an intrinsic characteristic of stiffness which does not make them particularly suitable when the number of pulleys increases or when there is severe reverse bending. The ropes of Warrington construction, on the other hand, have a composition such as to be more appropriate if you are dealing with a higher number of pulleys in the elevator, or when the bending ratios are reduced. Even in the case of reverse bending, their behavior is better than Seale ropes even if they have a lower resistance to surface abrasion. Clearly, each specific case shall be adequately evaluated and studied. It is recommended, in case of doubt, to involve a specialist in the subject who can advice in the best selection. Terminationsandsocketsforelevatorropes Once you have understood the topic of suspension ropes, however, we must not forget about the terminals, as they are the objects that ensure the rope remains anchored to its end points. An element that is often underestimated is referred to the resistance requirement of 80% of the breaking load of the rope. By reading how point 5.5.2.3 of EN 81-20 (similarly in EN 811) is formulated, it is understood that what must be ensured is that the “junction” between rope and terminals guarantees 80% of the breaking load of the rope itself. So, we could have a termination that reaches this value by itself, but when placed in conjunction with the rope, causes it to break at a lower value. Because of its shape, the way the wedge presses on the rope or for various other reasons. This element should even more be taken into consideration when dealing with coated suspension elements, as these are particularly delicate. The tests to be carried out in the laboratories must be aimed at ensuring that the connection between the suspension element and the termination guarantees 80% of the breaking load of the suspension means. But we must not forget that EN 13411-6/7 also provides that axial fatigue stress tests with 75,000 cycles must be carried out, after which the actual breaking load of the connection between the suspension means and the termination must be verified. Only upon passing these tests will it be possible to be sure that the requirement ismet by the connection between the two elements. Having clarified this aspect, it is good to understand which are the terminations for the ropes that are currently included in EN 81-20: • EN 13411-6: asymmetrical socket; • EN 13411-7: symmetrical socket; • EN 13411-3: termination with thimble eye fixed by an aluminum ferrule; 10 FOCUS TECNICO/ FUNI D i N i c o l a I m b i m b o
