The workplace and safety go hand in hand since in every workplace there are risks that must be eliminated or reduced to the very minimum. What is meant by “safety at work”? We could say that workplace safety refers to the set of measures, precautions, measures, evaluations, judgments, controls and monitoring that must be implemented within the various workplaces to protect the health and integrity of workers, external collaborators and anyone occasionally present to protect them from the risks present therein. So safety at work is indispensable and strictly correlated to correct company management. Simplifying as much as possible, safety at work takes into consideration two topics: prevention and protection, prevention meaning the measures to prevent a harmful event from occurring and protection the measures to limit the consequences of a harmful event that should occur. “Safety at work” is therefore a “necessary condition” for every working environment with at least one worker. Everyone knows that the legislation on safety and health of workers is constantly updated. Today the Legislative Decree of April 9, 2008, n.81, also known as the “Consolidated Law for Safety in the Workplace” is in force. It is, in fact, a “consolidated act”, a compendium, the purpose of which is to deal rationally with everything related to safety at work, establishing, among other things, principles, responsibilities and any sanctions. There are numerous figures “involved” by Legislative Decree 81/2008, from the employer to the worker, from the competent doctor to the person in charge, etc. The general protection measures are described in detail in art. 15 of Legislative Decree 81/2008 and subsequent amendments and additions and are listed below: a) the assessment of all risks to health and safety; b) prevention planning, aimed at a plan that coherently integrates the technical production conditions of the company as well as the influence of environmental factors and work organization in prevention; c) risks elimination and, where this is impossible, risk reduction to a minimum in relation to the knowledge acquired on the basis of technical progress; d) compliance with ergonomic principles in work organization, in the design of workplaces, in choice of equipment and in the definition of work and production methods, in particular in order to reduce the effects on health of monotonous and repetitive work; e) risk reduction at the source; f) replacement of dangerous things with is less dangerous ones; g) the limitation to a minimum of the number of workers who are, or who may be, exposed to risk; h) the limited use of chemical, physical and biological agents in the workplace; i) the priority of collective protection measures over individual protection measures; l) health control of workers; m) removing the worker from exposure to risk for health reasons inherent to his person and the assigning him / her to another job if possible; n) adequate information and training for workers; o) adequate information and training for managers and supervisors; p) adequate information and training for workers’ safety representatives; q) adequate instructions to workers; r) workers’ participation and consultation; s) workers’ safety representatives participation and consultation; t) planning of measures deemed appropriate to ensure the improvement of safety levels over time, including by adopting codes of conduct and good practices; u) the emergency measures to be implemented in the event of first aid, fire fighting, evacuation of workers and serious and immediate danger; v) the use of warning and safety signs; z) the regular maintenance of environments, equipment, systems, with particular regard to safety devices in compliance with the manufacturers’ instructions.
