The selection of environmentally friendly building materials is an integral part of the design of sustainable buildings, which is why reliable and verifiable environmental information on construction products is of paramount importance for measuring and monitoring the environmental performance of built assets. This information is developed according to specific standards and provided by manufacturers in the form of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Through the framework provided by the new ISO 22057 standard, this environmental information will now also be available in a digital format specifically developed for use within the Building Information Modelling. The possibility of being able to import the information contained in EPDs into calculation software for LCA evaluation and into the BIM environment is a great facilitator, especially useful when moving into the execution phase and defining specific products. Interoperability between BIM, BEM, and EPDs is therefore crucial in order to design and realise more environmentally and energy sustainable buildings.
