Alcune aziende che hanno propri stabilimenti specificano i dati relativi alla fase A3 energy production, it creates other impacts but does not directly emit CO2, as it does not involve combustion. The summary index expressing this, the production mix factor, is in kgCO2 emitted per kWh of electricity produced. The very different national data (e.g. the situation in Italy is more than six times worse than in France, but more than two times better than in Poland) are due to the energy choices of the different countries, which also depend on the sources available in their own or neighbouring territories. It is therefore different to produce the lift or its components, for example, in Switzerland than in China, and it is almost twice as good to do it in Spain than in Italy, from this point of view. For the same reasons, a decisive aspect is the place, or places, where the specific lift is declared to work, which can be very specific (a country) or rather generic (the global market for example). This reflects the rather relative value EPDs have; that is why they make it clear in their introductions that they are only comparable if they refer to exactly the same conditions. LIFE CYCLE AND MODULES The lift, therefore, like other products, has its own life cycle, the assessment of which includes the following modules: • A1: supply of raw materials; • A2: their transport to the factory; • A3: manufacture (of components or of the entire lift); • A4: transport to site; • A5: installation; • B1: use; • B2: maintenance; • B3: repair; • B4/B5: any modernisation or replacement; • B6: energy consumption during operation; • C1: dismantling; • C2: transport of dismantled materials; • C3: waste treatment for re-use, recovery or recycling; • C4: waste disposal; • D: reuse, recycling, recovery of waste in terms of net benefits. Phase B7 is not considered as the lift does not consume water. Furthermore, EPDs for lifts may not contain stages B3 to B5, which do not take place or do so in an unpredictable manner. Some companies that have their own factories specify data for stage A3 distinguishing between suppliers and own production. Stage D, if any, is a “benefit”, i.e. the calculated data is subtracted from the environmental impact of the product. This is followed in the EPD by a description of the materials (in kg and as a percentage of the total) of which the specified lifting is composed: • ferrous metals; • non-ferrous metals (e.g. aluminium, copper); • plastics and rubbers; certificazioni di Giuseppe Iotti
