Inoltre, in questo caso è stata analizzata l’influenThis phase highlighted that although lifts may appear to be simple structures, a safe and reliable design cannot ignore all those peculiarities that characterise their structural response. Engineers must always be aware that the presence of semi-rigid joints, the extensive use of cold-formed monosymmetrical joints subject to distortional and local buckling, and the influence of glass on the response, hinder the design of these structures if only theoretical equations and models are used. Structural design must always be assisted by testing. Thanks to this first phase of the research project, it was possible to create a database containing all experimental results on isolated components (columns, beams and joints) that can be used by Metal Working Srl in the near future for a more realistic design of structures. Finally, advanced international design standards (such as the American one, called AISI, and the Australian one) were applied to evaluate the safety of Metal Working Srl’s structures, thus giving the project results worldwide validity, not limited to the European level. The second part of the project was dedicated to innovation, with the creation of prototypes based on the results of the previous phase, considering both isolated components (beams and columns) and complete assemblies (beam-column connections). For each prototype, the actual level of safety was evaluated both numerically and experimentally. In addition, the influence of each product on several global case studies was analysed. Only solutions that resulted in a lower overall cost compared to the current standard (both production and construction) were saved, always guaranteeing optimum structural response.
