24 value of work and responsibility. I remember that at the age of eleven I was typing the letters my father left me every morning before going out. I started working more regularly in the company during the summer, after school ended, with the aim of earning enough to buy a moped. WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE COMPANY PERMANENTLY? After high school, my father told me that if I wanted to continue my studies, I could do so in the evenings. During the day, I would have to work in the company, because Emanuela, our first employee, was pregnant. That’s how my journey in RIAM began, at a very particular time because we were computerising the company. I still remember the arrival of the first computer, a PC 350 from Digital, and my commitment to learning and managing the new software. AT SOME POINT IN YOUR CAREER AT RIAM YOU FELT THE NEED FOR CHANGE. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO LEAD THE COMPANY? After a particularly delicate period, which kept me away from work for six months, I saw the company with new eyes. RIAM had moved on, of course, but there were so many unresolved knots. My father and uncle were often at odds: one was strategic and forward-looking, the other more down-to-earth and traditional. I acted as a buffer, but that role was no longer sustainable. I felt I had a different vision, a business plan that I had built with effort, thanks also to my master’s degree at CUOA Business School. But to realise it, space and autonomy were needed. So, after much thought, I decided to buy my uncle’s shares. WHAT WAS THE FIRST STEP? The first step was to talk to my husband, because I knew that this project would affect our family life. I immediately received full support from him. Then I involved my father, who supported me without hesitation. At that point, I contacted a credit broker, because it was essential to find a way to finance the operation. I decided to mortgage the house and put everything I had on the table. My priority was to obtain the necessary financing for the acquisition of my uncle’s company shares, so I prepared a detailed business plan to present to a bank outside the company’s circuit so as not to put the company’s relations in trouble. I reread and refined the numbers several times to make the project sound solid and convincing. In the end, the bank gave the green light. WHAT WAS YOUR UNCLE’S REACTION? I remember his surprised look, but I told him the truth: I saw no alternative. The company was at a standstill, and we could not continue like this. Some time earlier I had heard him and my father talking about the possibility of selling to a multinational company, because they could not find a common vision. For me it was unthinkable. e, quasi senza accorgermene, assorbivo il valore del lavoro e della responsabilità. Tempo prima avevo sentito lui e mio paGESTIONE AZIENDALE DI TITTI LO PAPA
