30 ness to a multinational and the consequences of this decision, both professionally and personally. LET’S START WITH THE GENERATIONAL TRANSITION. HOW DID YOUR ENTRY INTO THE COMPANY COME ABOUT? It was a natural path. I did not undergo the classic trauma of the generational transition, but I experienced moments of great change, especially after my father decided to step aside. I would have liked him to stay longer and help us out. WHAT WAS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR FATHER LIKE? My father was a very intelligent person, but also very strict. He had great strategic vision, great insight into the market and an extraordinary work ethic. Our relationship was complex: we were very similar but of course that doesn’t mean we always agreed. WHAT WAS THE DECISIVE PUSH THAT LED YOU TO SELL PART OF THE COMPANY AND TO CONSIDER ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS TO MAKE IT GROW? The decision to open up the company to new partners matured over time, starting with the realisation that in order to really seize growth opportunities, expertise or customer relations are not enough: you need a solid structure, an organisation capable of supporting even complex tasks within the timeframe required by the market. At a certain point, it becomes clear that you need reliable partners and resources to make the qualitative leap. It was this sense of limitation, combined with the desire not to miss out on important opportunities, that pushed me towards a strategic choice: to open the company in order to strengthen it. HOW DID YOU FEEL AT THE TIME OF THE SALE? Seeing the accounts full was a relief. I was dazed, but the moment of signing the contract was painful. It is not easy to sell a piece of family and personal history. AND THEN? At first I thought that not much would change, because I still retained a share in the company and my operational role. But I realised almost immediately that the dynamics were completely different. Moreover, when we joined the group, a very aggressive credit devaluation policy was applied, leading the company, which had previously been closing its balance sheet in the positive, to record a substantial loss for the year. This was a heavy blow. The multinational expected a quick recovery of the financial situation, which was not feasible in the short term. WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE AFTER THE SALE? When I sold the majority stake in the company, I knew that the change would be big, but I did not expect to be faced with such a rigid way of working. In my management, I was used to making decisions based on the reality of the market, adapting to customer needs and the nale e delle conseguenze di questa decisione, sia dal punto di vista professionale che personale.
