lavori. No, in realtà non è mai partita. WAS IT THE PRIVATE LIFT? The lift in question provides access to the Pope’s private flat in the Apostolic Palace, but it is not for exclusive use, the cardinals also use it to reach their flats. The episode tells a lot about Pope Francis: his irony, of course, but also his simplicity. He never wanted to use the lift reserved only for him; he preferred the shared one, because for him even a simple lift ride was an opportunity to stay close to others. HOW DID THE POPE ASK FOR HELP? ARE THERE TWO-WAY CALLS ON THE VATICAN LIFTS? Even before the introduction of Presidential Decree 162/99, all lifts in the Vatican were equipped with a telephone handset in the car, which was directly connected to the operations centre of the Vatican Fire Brigade. It was thanks to that system that Pope Francis was promptly freed. WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO WORK WITH THE VATICAN? An honour, but also a great responsibility. After that episode, OSAR carried out other interventions; I was also involved as a consultant and finally they proposed me to coordinate a new internal ‘lift division’. DID THEY EVER IMPLEMENT THAT DIVISION? No, in fact it never started. My consultancy officially started in March 2020. I remember that day perfectly, because it coincided with the news of the first Covid case in the Vatican. I signed the contract while there was already an atmosphere of alertness. Shortly afterwards, the Vatican closed everything down and activities were suspended until June 2020. From there my contract, which lasted one and a half years, resumed regularly. I worked throughout 2021 on the first step of the project, which was to catalogue all the installations. Then external consultancies such as mine were suspended ‘sine die’ until a new Register of Suppliers, linked to a new Procurement Code, was approved. HAVE YOU BEEN CONTACTED AGAIN BY THE VATICAN? Yes, last September. About two months ago I signed a new contract, this time to continue with the second step of the project. The objective is to identify the criticalities of each installation, establish the priorities for intervention, and draw up a sort of ‘technical specification’. We are talking about 153 lifts, all located within the Vatican walls and accessible only to Vatican citizens or authorised persons. The lifts in St. John’s Basilica and those in St. Peter’s Basilica are not included in my assignment, because they are subject to separate management as they are also open to the public. I only temporarily suspended inspections in the days following the death of Pope Francis, for obvious reasons of respect and security. DO YOU HAVE ANY ANECDOTES RELATED TO THIS ACTIVITY OF YOURS? In the Vatican there is an ironclad rule: those who work in a department (typography, 84 ATTUALITÀ DI TITTI LO PAPA
