DI JOSÉ MARÍA COMPAGNI MORALES* 16 ON April 28, 2025, Spain experienced a massive power outage that left almost the entire country without electricity for several hours. The abrupt outage also affected Portugal and paralysed key infrastructure such as traffic lights, trains, and telecommunications. Thousands of lifts came to a sudden halt between floors. Estimates suggest that between 5,000 and 10,000 people were trapped in lifts across the country. In Barcelona, emergency service 090 received 388 lift-related calls in the first hours of the event, accounting for 90% of all incidents handled, with 150 people freed by noon. In Madrid, firefighters responded promptly: by 5:00 p.m., 174 rescues had already been completed following more than 150 calls. These figures reflect the scale of the impact on vertical mobility in dense urban environments. In response to the critical situation, lift maintenance companies activated their emergency protocols. Several firms deployed their entire available technical workforce, including off-duty and vacation staff, to immediately address the surge in incidents. Collaboration with emergency services was essential: in many cases, lift technicians accompanied police officers to manually locate cars with trapped persons, building by building. After the critical phase, it was confirmed that lifts equipped with automatic rescue systems performed effectively. These systems, powered by backup batteries, allowed the car to automatically travel to the nearest floor and open the doors, enabling evacuation without external assistance. This feature, increasingly common in new models, is expected to become standard in future equipment. Questi dispositivi, alimentati da batterie di riserva, hanno consentito alla IMPATTO DEL BLACKOUT DEL 28 APRILE 2025 SUGLI ASCENSORI in Spagna THE IMPACT OF THE 28 APRIL 2025 BLACKOUT ON LIFTS in Spain L’INTERRUZIONE DI CORRENTE ELETTRICA HA CAUSATO IL BLOCCO DI MIGLIAIA DI ASCENSORI E L’INTRAPPOLAMENTO DI DIVERSE MIGLIAIA DI PERSONE The power outage caused thousands of lifts to stop, trapping several thousand people inside BLACKOUT
