78 to provide this service. Subsequently, other companies also adapted, discovering the specific difficulties of this extension of the service, not least due to the limited number of technicians available. The Milanese lift industry had a further specificity: in addition to the national associations, there was ALMA (Associazione Lombarda Manutenzione Ascensori), which brought together the “historic” maintenance companies of the Lombard capital. In this context, a group of 19 “visionary” companies tried to find a different solution to the problem of availability: to create a consortium that would provide this new service for its members, thus freeing them from a considerable organisational burden. In concrete terms, the Consorzio Imprese Ascensori had to set up its own structure to provide night and holiday assistance to its members, with its own staff dedicated exclusively to this task. Today, terms such as outsourcing and spin-off are commonly used, but at the time, the operation was innovative and was viewed with great scepticism. Companies were still mainly focused on installing new systems, neglecting maintenance services. Another very sensitive issue was that competing companies were joining forces to provide a service for the benefit of their members, who remained competitors in their daily activities. These wise people managed to detach themselves from the companies to look further ahead and decided to embark on a new path together, with specific objectives and the utmost mutual respect. The consortium, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year, has consolidated its position over the years, achieving a significant presence in the Milanese landscape. “Convincing competing companies to delegate a new service to an external body created by themselves was a real challenge. The consortium company form responded to this need, enhancing the concept of a service dedicated to members, non-profit but with clear and continuous investments,” explained Antonio Plicato, president of the Consortium for 24 years and president of the Board of Directors of CIE – SIMEA. “During the Consortium’s first Board of Directors meeting, we joked that if we reached 100 installations in the first month, we would jump out of the window (we were on the ground floor). We succeeded in the first month, the second and so on, until today we manage several thousand lifts with a staff of 20 employees. I believe we have achieved our goal of providing a high-quality service at an attractive cost, conditions that are difficult to achieve individually. Over time, a cohesive group of competent technicians has been created, capable of dealing with daily difficulties with the consideration and respect that a user in temporary difficulty deserves. The collaboration (integration, I would say) with the call centre, of which we are members, specialised and dedicated solely to companies in the sector, has certainly been important. Over the years, we have added a highly appreciated carpentry workshop to our basic service, while we have not been able to set up a per svolgere questo servizio.
