ANACAM MAGAZINE - n. 4 ottobre | dicembre 2025

25 AT the end of December 2025, CEN published EN 81-42:2025 and EN 81-30:2025, both approved with 100% of votes in favour. Pending publication of the respective references in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU), the texts of the two standards can already be considered “good practice” for all intents and purposes. It is important to note that, once the reference has been published in the OJEU, EN 81-42 will confer presumption of conformity with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, but not with the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230. EN 81-30 also falls within the scope of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and, following publication of the reference in the OJEU, may be used as a harmonised standard for the purposes of presumption of conformity. Let us now look at the contents of the two standards in detail. EN 81-42:2025 The EN 81-42 standard, ‘Vertical lifting appliances with enclosed carrier intended for use by persons, including persons with disability’, concerns fully enclosed vertical lifting appliances designed for transporting persons, including users with disabilities. The document specifies the safety requirements for the design, construction and manufacture of electrically powered vertical lifting appliances, permanently installed and fixed to the structure of a building, intended for use by persons, including persons with disabilities: • that move vertically between predetermined levels along a guided path whose inclination with respect to the vertical does not exceed 15°; • supported or sustained by rack and pinion, traction transmission with ropes, traction transmission with non-circular coated elastomeric suspension means (hereinafter referred to as traction belts), positive traction transmission with ropes, chains, toothed belts, screw and nut, guided chain or hydraulic jack (direct or indirect); • with enclosed lift shafts; • with a rated speed not exceeding 0.15 m/s; • with the load support completely enclosed; • with a temperature in the lift shaft and machinery spaces between +5 °C and +40 °C. EN 81-42 does not specify additional requirements for: • lightning protection; • operation subject to ATEX regulations; • lifting equipment whose primary function is the transport of goods; • earthquakes, flooding; • firefighting and evacuation; • noise and vibrations; • transport of type C wheelchairs as defined in standards EN 12183:2022 and/or EN 12184:2022; • vertical sliding doors.
