People work ‘side by side’, but not necessarily ‘together’. A group can be effective in contexts where tasks are repetitive, standardised and not very interdependent. However, when the environment becomes complex or requires innovation, the limitations of the group become more apparent. WHAT IS A TEAM WITHIN A COMPANY A team, on the other hand, is a group of people who share a common goal and work in a coordinated and interdependent manner to achieve it. In a team, the end result is not simply the sum of individual contributions, but the outcome of a continuous integration of skills, ideas and responsibilities: the purest concept of synergy, where the end result is greater than the sum of its parts! Within a team: • the goal is shared and clearly defined; • roles are distinct but complementary; • there is a strong and deep-rooted sense of collective responsibility; • communication is open, frequent and solution-oriented; • leadership is often participatory (depending on the situation and context). A project team developing a new product is a typical example of a team. Marketing, production, and research and development collaborate synergistically, constantly exchanging ideas to achieve a common result. The main difference between a group and a team lies in the degree of interdependence among members. In a group, each person can carry out their task relatively independently. In a team, however, each person’s work directly affects that of the others. This interdependence brings about a significant shift in the perception of responsibility. In a group, people tend to think in terms of ‘my task’ and ‘my result’. In a team, the talk is of ‘our goal’ and ‘our success’. If one member fails, the whole team suffers. This shift from individual to shared responsibility is what transforms a group of professionals into a true team. BUT WHAT DOES A COMPANY REALLY NEED? In certain operational situations, where tasks are independent and standardised, a well-organised group may suffice. However, when a company faces complex challenges, competitive markets or innovation processes, the team approach becomes essential: a true measure of success. Structured collaboration enables the integration of diverse skills, more informed decision-making and a more flexible response to change. True managerial competence lies in knowing which model is best suited to the context and in guiding the evolution from a group to a team when necessary. HOW DOES THE ‘MIRACLE’ HAPPEN? The transition from a group to a team does not happen automatically: it requires structured, specific and planned work across several levels: PILLOLE DI CRESCITA VERTICALE DI ROBERTO ARDIZZI*
