* Esperto ascensori ** Esperto apparecchi di sollevamento less safe than the other. The key point is rather to ascertain whether the different solution is in fact the result of a different risk scenario. In this regard, EN 81-20 and EN 81-50 can serve as a useful technical benchmark: not because they should automatically be applied to lifting platforms, but because they constitute the established standard for managing the risks associated with the vertical transport of people. A NEW REVISION ON THE HORIZON The publication of these two standards does not mark the end of the standardisation process. A comparison between EN 81-41 and EN 81-42 has already highlighted the need for greater consistency between the requirements applicable to the various types of lifting equipment intended for the transport of persons, including those used in industrial and construction contexts. The issue becomes even more pressing in view of the implementation of the new Machinery Regulation from January 2027. The standards currently available were in fact developed in relation to Directive 2006/42/ EC and will need to be progressively realigned with the new legislative framework introduced by Regulation (EU) 2023/1230. It is therefore reasonable to expect – albeit not in the short term – a new phase of revision of EN 81-41 and EN 81-42, during which it will be possible to address the differences that currently exist in a more systematic manner and to assess which requirements should be retained, amended or brought into line with a common framework. The aim should not be to make the two standards identical. The design differences between a platform with a loadbearing structure that is not fully enclosed and a lift with a fully enclosed load-bearing structure are real and must be taken into account. The aim should rather be to ensure greater consistency in risk assessment, whilst retaining those differences that are genuinely justified on technical grounds and reviewing those that are not directly linked to a different risk scenario. * Lift expert ** Lifting equipment expert NORMATIVA DI PAOLO TATTOLI* E CARLO BELLETTI**
