The accident of the roman metro station “Repubblica”

29 September 2020

The Ministry of Infrastructure has concluded the investigation. Findings and recommendations are online.

The Directorate General for Railway and Maritime Investigations (DIGIFEMA) of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has published on its website the final report on the accident that occurred on an escalator in the "Repubblica" station of the Rome metro line in October 2018 during which over twenty CSKA Moscow fans were injured. DIGIFEMA investigations have no judicial value but analyze the technical causes of accidents and formulate recommendations to prevent future ones. The final report on the accident in the "Repubblica" station highlighted system deficiencies in the sector, in particular with regard to personnel training involved in the escalator maintenance, and mandatory checks and information to be provided by manufacturers. Anacam, which is among the recipients of the recommendations, invites all associated companies involved in the manufacture, import, distribution and marketing of escalators to ensure that the systems placed on the market always include user and maintenance manuals that clearly define the adjustment and calibration of the brakes and emergency brakes as to guarantee their correct functioning, as well as testing the emergency brakes, when carrying out periodical checks which should be more frequent than the current ten-year period, possibly under low load conditions.

Although these recommendations are issued for escalators in public service, Anacam believes that they should be applied to all escalators, regardless of their intended use.
