‘Digital’ number plate in lifts: the European Commission gives the green light

05 January 2023

The European Commission on 16 December gave the green light to the 'digital signage' in lifts. At the urging of the ADCO Group for Lifts, one of the informal groups of market surveillance authorities whose members are appointed by EU countries, the European Commission clarified that the use of LCD screens in lifts is not prohibited by Directive 2014/33/EU, as long as the marking affixed in the car is always ‘visible, legible and indelible’, throughout the lifespan of the installation.
The installer must ensure that the technological solution applied meets these requirements; in particular, it is the installer's task and responsibility to ensure that the marking does not disappear due to electronic faults or power failures, and therefore that it is 'indelible'.
The European Commission has specified that in addition to the load capacity, maximum number of persons, CE marking and identification number of the notified body that took part in the conformity assessment procedure, the 'digital plate' must also show other more detailed information about the manufacturer and the installation. Of course, the serial number assigned by the municipality and the name of the person in charge of the periodic inspections must also be indicated.
